How to Keep a Pet Skunk

By eHow Pets Editor

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Secure your home as if you were childproofing it for a toddler. Skunks are curious by nature and can weasel their way into cabinets and closets. If they get into the cabinets, they may have access to toxic chemicals. Keep your cabinets locked at all times when you have a pet skunk in the house.
  • Step 2:
Cuddle as much as possible with your pet skunk. Skunks need a lot of attention in order to get used to humans. They may be standoffish at first, but with lots of love, pet skunks grow to love their owners. It's especially important to play with their feet so you won't have problems when you cut their nails.
  • Step 3:
Feed them a variety of foods including fruit, yogurt, dairy, ground turkey and eggs. Unlike most animals, skunks enjoy a wide variety of foods. Even though they don't drink much, it's still important to have a fresh bowl of water available for your pet skunk.
  • Step 4:
Give your pet skunk proper veterinary care. Skunks need shots and de-worming, and they must be spayed or neutered. It may be hard to find a veterinarian that deals with skunks, though, because not many people keep them as pets.
